Unlock your leadership potential

Unlock Your Leadership Potential

Everyone will have the ability to influence others, but not everyone will be an effective leader. The effect we have on other people determines how we are perceived in life.

What would the people you lead say if you asked them to describe the impact you had on their lives? Would they claim that you changed the way they think? Would they describe you as an example of the type of leader they aspire to be?

Whether or not a leader has the abilities required for the role, in our view leadership is to a large extent defined by the way a leader deals with failures and setbacks rather than by their successes. Success is the result of removing all obstacles that prevented to achieve it.

The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.

~ John Maxwell

Here are a few ideas to hone your leadership skills based on your values and traits:

  • Be yourself and not someone you are not. What you do is less important than who you are.
  • Remain human. You are going to make mistakes and you do not have all the solutions so do not pretend you have them. Admit where you are wrong.
  • Be open-minded, but also hold a stand. While you are open to new ideas, let your values serve as a guide.
  • Keep learning and forward looking. Instead of blame games and name calling, it is far more effective to reflect, learn and make adjustments to improve in the future.
  • Self-care. Do not attempt to ride your emotional waves. There is a strong swell out there; stay on board. Being a leader is not for the weak of the heart.
  • Healthy communication is the foundation of both good relationships and effective organisational cultures.
  • Develop yourself. The chokehold takes the lead. Keep moving forward.
  • Being able to look beyond yourself and recognise the genuine impact you can have on others may be the greatest gift personal development can offer.
  • Love your craft but prioritise your people. Give twice as many thanks as you ask. People wait their entire lives to be acknowledged. The need for meaning and contribution is as real as the need for food, and this is the condition of humanity.
  • Keep your word. It is all you have. Strong leaders are trustworthy. When they say something, it happens. Their word is 100% credible.
  • Develop more leaders. There are enough followers. Make a lasting impression and protect the future.
